Environmental Sustainability

Picture
We are committed to fighting food insecurity our community while minimizing our ecological footprint through a series of targeted, sustainable practices. Our approach is rooted in a zero-waste philosophy, which has allowed us to eliminate on-site dumpsters and meticulously separate recyclables, dramatically reducing our waste and costs by thousands of dollars annually. We typically spend about $150/year on trash disposal.

We recognize the power of community collaboration. Through initiatives like our ongoing clean plastic grocery bag donation drive and the collection of egg cartons for repacking bulk eggs, we actively engage our community in reducing the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill.

Volunteers pick up compost material after each distribution using it to enrich their garden soil and diverting organic waste from our landfill.

We empower our clients by letting them choose their food, which reduces food waste for them and our food pantry.

Environmental sustainability is integral to our mission. Looking ahead, our 3-5 year plan includes installing solar panels, underscoring our commitment to environmental stewardship.

We pledge to uphold our commitment to environmental sustainability through the following actions:
  1. Continual Improvement: We will consistently seek ways to enhance our sustainability practices, reducing our environmental footprint and promoting eco-friendly initiatives.
  2. Zero-Waste Operations: We are committed to maintaining our zero-waste philosophy, striving to reduce landfill contributions by maximizing recycling, reusing materials, composting, and reducing waste at its source.
  3. Energy Efficiency: We will actively pursue energy-saving measures, including the planned installation of solar panels, to decrease our carbon footprint and promote renewable energy use.
  4. Community Engagement: We commit to fostering partnerships with local organizations and engaging our community in sustainability efforts, amplifying our collective impact.
  5. Education and Advocacy: We will continue to educate our team and the broader community about the importance of environmental sustainability.
Through these commitments, we affirm our dedication to creating a healthier, more sustainable environment for the present and future generations of Jeff Davis County.
