UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGES OF FOOD INSECURITY IN JEFF DAVIS COUNTY

Access to Fresh Produce
Food insecurity looms large overall in our county, where access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables is limited. To combat this, we stand out as one of the few food pantries in Texas that purchase fresh produce from a wholesale distributor, ensuring our clients have access to nutritious choices. In 2024, we distributed 304,243 lbs of food. Fresh produce accounted for 33% of the food we distributed.

Child Food Insecurity
According to the US Census, Jeff Davis County ranks #1 (out of 254 counties) in Texas for school-age child poverty (ages 5-17) and #6 nationally. Unlike 95% of US public schools, our school districts lack cafeterias and do not participate in the National School Lunch Program. This creates a unique challenge, and we are dedicated to addressing it head-on through a variety of food pantry programs designed specifically for children in Jeff Davis County.

We rely solely on the donations from individuals, corporations, grants from foundations, and our annual fundraisers. We do not receive money from federal, state, or local government. We work hard at being good stewards of the money you donate. We fulfill our mission with three part-time employees and many hardworking volunteers.
