![]() Jeff Davis County Library and Food Pantry of Jeff Davis County are partnering to offer a new food and nutrition education program for all ages. The Charlie Cart Project is an all-in-one program -- a kitchen on wheels and a full curriculum with classroom-tested recipes. Educators from 220 organizations in 39 states use the Charlie Cart tools and resources to teach basic cooking skills to their communities, transforming lives with hands-on food education. Project Director Brittney Little, who previously worked in a similar role at the Central Texas Food Bank, will be the primary culinary educator. She will offer classes and demonstrations at the food pantry, library, classrooms, and special events across the county. “I am thrilled to be partnering with the Food Pantry to provide this educational but fun way of learning about good food and nutrition,” said Library Director and Consumer Health Information Specialist Gwin Grimes. Jeff Davis County Library is an affiliate of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) Region 3, which awarded the project grant. Vicki Gibson, executive director of the Food Pantry said, “Our clients will benefit from the live cooking demonstrations using ingredients distributed by the Food Pantry. We want to educate clients about the connection between overall health and food. The Charlie Cart Project will help us achieve that goal.” The Charlie Cart Project was founded in 2015 by the former director of the Edible Schoolyard Project and a team of educators and designers. They set out to create an affordable and comprehensive food education program, which is critical to improved health outcomes. The Charlie Cart Project in Jeff Davis County is supported by the National Library Of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number UG4LM012345.
