The WTFB is a source for food for 65 hunger-relief organizations in 19 West Texas counties. On August 10, Greg Clark, Regional Operations Manager, and Kelly Dirden, Program Director from the WTFB, hosted a lunch at the Food Pantry’s Brenda and John Bell Distribution Center to present the award to Harrison and to provide training to regional pantry directors. Attendees learned about the rules and regulations of The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) regarding the distribution of USDA foods to eligible households. Board President Susan Penney and Board Member Margaret O’Donnell from Fort Davis attended.

Through the Healthy Food, Healthy Lives program, the Food Pantry strives to provide the healthiest foods available through the WTFB, local grocers and other sources. A primary focus for healthy food choices is the Children’s School Lunch Program that fills the gap left by the absence of cafeterias and federal lunch programs in Fort Davis ISD and Valentine ISD. Families with school age children choose from a variety of lunch foods including sandwich makings, fresh veggies and fruits, cheese and yogurt suitable for a lunchbox. Harrison is careful to purchase foods for children with low sugar and no high-fructose corn syrup. Healthy Food, Healthy Lives has been supported in part by many West Texas area foundations, and scores of individual donations. Harrison and the Pantry’s board of directors believe that everyone should have access to adequate healthy food.
