FAQ

Can I get emergency food assistance?

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) supplements the diets of low income individuals by providing emergency food assistance at no cost. You  must fill out a form H1555 (Household Application for USDA Foods to determine eligibility. Your income must be at or below 185% of federal poverty guidelines OR experiencing an unexpected temporary crisis such as medical treatment, burial expenses of a household member, loss of employment, house repair or replacement due to disaster, etc.

How do I become a Food Pantry client?

In order to receive assistance, you must:
1) Reside in Jeff Davis County when submitting your application. 
2) Fill out a TEXCAP H1555 form every year.
3) Sign for your food when you pick it up.
4) Meet the household gross income guidelines based on 185% of the federal poverty guidelines. 

Proof of income, proof of identification or citizenship documentation is not required.

What is the Kids Pantry?

Kids Pantry is located inside the Jeff Davis County Library, open Mon-Fri 10-6 & Sat 10-2. 

The Kids Pantry is available to ALL kids under 18 in Jeff Davis County and all FDISD & VISD students.

No limits, no income requirements, no application, no personal info collected from or about the children. 

Any Jeff Davis County child can ask a librarian and as always, library services (including Kids Pantry) are provided judgment-free and confidentially. There should be no stigma about visiting the Kids Pantry! 

The shelves, fridge, and freezer are stocked. Children are welcome to visit the Kids Pantry daily for snacks or family-friendly food to take home.

Summer Feeding Program

What is the Pack-A-Lunch (PAL) program?

If you are a Food Pantry client your school age children (pre-K thru 12th) are eligible for our PAL program. 

On distribution day, you can pick up the ingredients for healthy sack lunches for each child. These include a loaf of bread, lunch meat, cheese, peanut butter, jelly, bananas, oranges, yogurt, baby carrots, and several snack items. 

This is FREE to our Food Pantry clients.

If you would like to sponsor a child’s lunch, the cost to the Food Pantry is $25/month per child. 45% of the children enrolled in JDC schools (FDISD & VISD) depend on the Food Pantry for food, especially for school lunches because our schools have NO CAFETERIAS & NO SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAMS. The Food Pantry provides lunch foods all year long for 109 children for about $300/yr per child. 

What is the Senior Box Program?

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (AKA Senior Box) helpsvulnerable seniors (60+) who might otherwise have to choose between food and basic needs. 

The prepacked boxes are specifically designed to provide supplemental nutrition. Boxes typically include canned fruits & vegetables, juice, beans, meat, cheese, peanut butter, powdered milk, rice or pasta, oatmeal. 

To qualify you must fill out an application (#H1504) and provide the number of people in your household and combined household income. Income guidelines are based on 130% of the federal poverty guidelines. Additionally, you will need to provide proof of name, date of birth (TX DL or birth certificate), JDC residence (TX DL, lease, utility bill, etc.). 

 Senior Boxes are delivered to clients on the first distribution of each month.

Is this confidential?

Yes! All staff and volunteers are trained and sign a confidentiality agreement. Information collected is provided only to West Texas Food Bank (our certifying entity), UDSA, and the Texas Department of Agriculture.
