So close! Tex Harrison, Executive Director of the Food Pantry of Jeff Davis County, has announced that last weekend’s Wheels and Heels for Meals bicycle ride/walk has brought in $29,000 of the $30,000 goal set for the event.
More than 30 participants rode bicycles along the Fort Davis to Valentine route or walked from the Food Pantry to the Historic Fort to bring in funds for what has become the organization’s biggest annual fundraiser. More than half of the participants traveled from San Antonio and Houston to support the event.
Donors wishing to help fill the $1000 gap between funds raised and the goal can visit the website, www.foodpantry-jdc.org to make a contribution.
Next year, organizers plan to expand the walk route to include a nature walk. The 2017 Wheels & HEELS for Meals date is, as always, the first Saturday of October, which will be October 7, 2017.
The next fundraising event for the Food Pantry is the annual Harvest Bowl on Saturday, November 12 from 5 to 7 pm. The community is invited to the Food Pantry’s Brenda and John Bell Distribution Center on Compromise Street in Fort Davis. In addition to the opportunity to enjoy an “all-you-can-eat” selection of gourmet soups, chili, homemade bread, desserts and beverages, live music will be included. Pottery from artisans Richard Reinberg, Janet Stewart, Karen Nakakihara, and Linda Duncan will be available for purchase.
The Food Pantry of Jeff Davis County’s mission is to help all the families in need in our area. In total, the non-profit organization serves about 20% of the families in our county from distribution sites in Fort Davis and Valentine.
